Legacy Project: I created materials focused around synthesis and the development of student skills. I created 4 big-picture unit study sheets for students along with implementation notes and curriculum for instructors. Over the 4 "BIG sheets" covering the calc 2 course, student see a variety of material synthesis formats and move from a highly structured document all the way to creating their own forth and final unit synthesis document from scratch. At the end of the course students have a 4 page booklet covering each topic of calc 2. I expanded this project, creating synthesis curriculum and materials for calculus 1-3. See "BIG Sheets" under personally developed materials for more information.
I helped create a set of outlined mini-lectures as an optional way for recitation instructors to practice lecturing and using or writing lecture notes. This also helped our instructors of record, by allowing time for instruction covering prerequisite matterials that students often lack.
Instructors of record for courses within our calculus sequence meet with students four 50-minuite classes per week (three for precalc), hold office hours, hold tutoring center hours, and maintain communication with their students. Instructors attend weekly coordination meetings where they are given activities to facilitate in class and are given the support needed to write their own lectures. Instructors write, administer, and grade their own weekly quizes. They also serve on exam writing committees and rubric writting committes. Instructors proctor and grade all exams for their course. Instructors are encouraged to create new materials for the course and share them with the instructional team.
I created a worksheet covering Taylor Series Manipulations.
Recitation instructors meet for one 50-minuite class per week. In recitation they lead an activity and occasionally give a mini-lecture. Recitation instructors work in the tutoring center, grade written homework, and provide detailed homework feedback to students. They also work togehter to write homework rubrics and assist as needed with exam proctoring and grading.
Mathematics Teacher Training is a pedagogy course taught to 1st and 4th semester graduate students to help prepare them for their teaching assignments and future jobs. The team of instructors include one teaching faculty and three graduates students. Together they facilitate this pedagogy course covering topics including active learning, APOS theory, interaction patterns, holistic grading, and relational vs instrumental learning. They provide feedback on assignments including lesson planning, micro-teaching, and the creation of active learning documents. Each member curates and assigns mathematics education articles and course work relevant to a course topic.
I created a lesson on types of feedback. As the Inclusive Pedagogy Graduate Student Educator, I also observed each students teaching and provided feedback.
Supplemental Labs are courses separate from our standard calculus sequence which students concurrently enroll in if they are identified as at-risk of failing. Instructors of record for these courses teach under the supervision of a faculty mentor rather than a course coordinator. They lead weekly meetings with their mentor and undergraduate learning assistant. They create the canvas pages, syllabuses, and all logistics for the course. They delivered lectures, facilitate activities, and grade assignments. They also hold office hours and maintain strong communication with students beyond the levels typically expected in other courses. They update and create new materials for the course. Updates made to the course are part of their legacy project.
I created a new part of the curriculum focused on note taking and exam preparation skills. I also created a graphing derivatives worksheet and a new first day activity using the principles of the activist approach.
As a preliminary exam preparation program mentor, I organized and taught graduate students who were studying for their topology/differential geometry or analysis preliminary exams. I developed a preparation timeline, assigned practice problems, and taught concepts that students were struggling with. I organized meeting times and facilitated group studying to help prepare them to take the exams. I met daily with them in the month leading up to exams.
Experimental Math Labs are projects pitched by potential instructors and selected to run by Dr. Katherine Stange. Once selected, experimental math lab instructors take applications and select students to participate. Students may sign up for Experimental Math Lab for transcript credit or for payment. Instructors have total freedom to organize their curriculum.
